"While I gave birth, the corrections officer was standing directly behind the doctor, witnessing my child’s entrance into the world of the criminal justice system." – Carole 2014 Carole helped fight to pass the bill (A.6430-A/S.983-A) that prohibits the use of shackling during the transport of all pregnant inmates at State and local correctional facilities, and within eight weeks after the delivery or pregnancy outcome, except in the most extraordinary of circumstances. Biographies Carole is an activist and professor and former Justice Leadership USA (JLUSA) leader and mother of Jahmil. She works as a disability analyst and has taught anthropology & sociology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Carole has received numerous recognitions for her advocacy work in criminal and social justice issues such as anti-shackling of pregnant women and termination of parental rights, including John Jay’s Howard D. Mann Humanitarianism in Service, the Coalition for Women Prisoners’ Advocacy, and most recently, Citizen’s Against Recidivism’s Glenn E. Martin Advocacy of the Year Awards. Jahmil is a filmmaker passionate about storytelling for social transformation. Biography Stephanie is mother of Major, an anti-shackling activist and a social worker in training. In her early 20s, she developed a painful condition called polycystic kidney disease and became addicted to her opioid pain medication, leading to a battle with drugs. While pregnant with her son Major, she was arrested for trafficking drugs over state lines and was incarcerated for two years. The social workers assigned to help Stephanie adapt to life as a new mother and her fellow inmates gave her the strength to overcome her addiction. Stephanie is now studying to be a social worker in University. As a result of her experiences during incarceration, she has become an anti-shackling activist and has protested to close Rikers Island. She brings her three-year old son, Major with her to #CloseRikers protests. "My son is what really keeps me going. Women build each other up in prison because our love is all you have." – Delaisia Timeline 2013 Delaisia, who was working as a nurse, is incarcerated while pregnant. 2014 Delaisia gives birth to Ya-Ya in prison. She sends Ya-ya to her family to take care of her. 2015 Delaisia is released from prison and interns as a receptionist at Hour children. There she receives her GED and is now enrolled in school to become a registered nurse Biography Delaisia is the mother of Ya-Ya and is in training to become a registered nurse. Delaisia was working towards being a certified nurse assistant and was one month pregnant when she was arrested for selling drugs and collecting unemployment while working. Today Delaisia is taking classes in the field of medicine and is interning as a receptionist. She is teaching her two-year-old daughter Ya-ya to read, cook, and attend church together. Her experiences have taught her that kindness is invaluable toward survival. She strongly believes that small crimes are not equivalent to the trauma faced while incarcerated and forced to be separated from her family.
